Fishing in Croatia offers an exciting adventure for anglers seeking a variety of species throughout the year. The Adriatic Sea’s changing temperatures and migratory patterns create distinct fishing seasons, each with its own highlights. Fishing Mania Charter stands out by offering trips only during peak seasons when the chances of hooking fish are high. This guide breaks down the best times to fish in Croatia, what species you can expect, and how the seasons shape your fishing experience near popular spots like Šibenik and Split.

The Start of Big Game Season

As water temperatures rise through April, the Adriatic Sea comes alive. This warming triggers the migration of small mackerel and anchovies toward the reefs. Predatory fish follow closely behind, marking this the beginning of the Bluefin Tuna season in Croatia. Alongside these big game species, John Dory, Dentex (snapper), and small bream species also become more active.

May is an excellent month for fishing tours. The air is crisp, days are sunny, and nights remain cool, creating comfortable conditions for anglers. It is the beginning of tourist season so finding accommodation is easy and there are few crowds. During this time, tuna and other predator fish flood the reefs, feeding aggressively on abundant mackerel and sardines as they prepare to spawn. This aggressive feeding results in a high hookup rate, and over the last few years it has consistently been between 75% and 90% for the month of May. All techniques can be used as tuna are feeding on the surface and down deep throughout the day.

If you plan a fishing tour near Šibenik or Split in May, expect decent fishing for bottom species, and superb fishing for Tuna. The combination of ideal weather and active fish makes May one of the best months to experience Croatia’s rich marine life.

July and August: Peak Big Game and Mahi Mahi Action

After the aggressive feeding in May, the big game fishing season pauses briefly in early June when tuna move to the open sea to spawn. However, by late June and early July, they return in force. July and August mark the peak of the Bluefin Tuna season in Croatia, with many days offering multiple hookups. In this period using live bait and chumming with sardines give the most effective results. The hookup rate during July and August remains high, around 75% to 90%, making it a thrilling time for anglers targeting big game species.

During these months, mahi mahi, swordfish, and shark also become active, especially from mid-July to early September. The warm summer waters create perfect conditions for these vibrant fish to thrive. They are mostly bycatch, as tuna are the main target.

Fishing near Split and Šibenik during this period is ideal, as this is the prime tuna position at this time of year. The clear summer skies and warm seas enhance the overall experience, whether you are a seasoned angler or trying your hand at big game fishing for the first time.

September to December: Snapper and Squid Fishing Madness

As August ends, the sea temperature begins to drop, triggering a massive migration of squid toward inshore waters. This migration signals the strongest period of Snapper and Squid fishing in Croatia, which lasts through December.

Snapper, especially Dentex species, are the main target during this time. Trophy snapper weighing between 2 and 10 kilograms are common catches, with Grouper, John Dory, and Murray Eel being bycatch. The most effective way to catch these predatory fish is using live squid. Squid fishing is most productive at sunset and during the night, using underwater lights to attract these fascinating creatures, from depths of 15- 40 meters.

Fall fishing in Croatia brings another exciting addition: amberjack join the feeding frenzy. At the beginning of September mostly 1-2kilo amberjack are hooked, by Obtober and November 10-15 kilo, and their season lasts until the end of February, with the winter months delivering 20kg+ fish.

For those interested in Dentex fishing or squid trips, September through December offers a unique experience. The cooler weather and changing sea conditions create a different but equally rewarding fishing environment compared to the summer months.
